Saundersfoot Community Council invites your feedback on our plan to use a herd of goats remove the brambles, ivy etc from the blue map area in St Issells Old Cemetery.
Saundersfoot Community Council is the burial authority for St Issells Cemetery.
The North West Corner of the St Issells Old Cemetery has become overgrown with brambles and other weeds over the years. The Council would like to remove the overgrowth, making it more accessible and restoring this beautiful place for quiet reflection and remembrance.
The photos below show areas where gravestones are partially or totally hidden. It is difficult to get within five or even ten metres of the wall in most places.
Because the gravestones are hidden under weeds, if we use powered strimmers / flails it would be a health and safety risk to the operatives, and might cause significant damage to any soft sandstone memorials.
As a Council we minimise the use of weedkillers wherever possible and this would only be considered as a last resort option.
Following conversations with Narberth Town Council who successfully used a herd of "Bio Goats" to clear weeds from their cemetery. Saundersfoot Councillors have met with the company who propose having a herd of 20 goats in the blue area on map above for up to 4 weeks.
We recognise that this is a novel approach and that residents might have concerns with this strategy. We therefore will make a public presentation of our plans at the next Meet the Councillor event on 5th July at 11am in the Regency Hall where we will give more details and answer any questions.
Bio Goats is an eco-friendly weed and brush control company. This is an eco-friendly way of dealing with invasive weed, brush and knotweed.
The scale of the work needed means that, for the mutual safety of the goats and people, during the four week period the blue map area would be closed to the public. However anyone having a specific family anniversary during the closure who needs access should contact the Clerk at clerk@saundersfoot-cc.gov.wales or 07562 959405 who will make arrangements for safe access.
